The WWF TCO Blue Action Fund (BAF) project aims to improve the management effectiveness of Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP) and associated buffer zones within the ‘Rufiji-Mafia-Kilwa seascape’ to maintain and improve its ecological value and livelihoods. The project will focus on increasing the resilience of the coastal ecosystems and the communities, depending on their natural resources and ecosystem services, by reducing overexploitation in the seascape. This will be done by (i) improving the management of the protected areas by introducing effective co-management including surveillance and enforcement, raising awareness and increasing compliance to management, (ii) facilitating the next level of small scale fisheries management through introducing catch data monitoring and catch management measures, (iii) providing enhanced enterprise skills and alternative food and livelihood pathways to lessen the dependence of coastal communities on natural resources and iv developing an overall framework for integrated sustainable development planning through the designation of the Rufiji-Mafia-Kilwas Seascape as Man and Biosphere Reserve. Together these measures will significantly strengthen the resilience of the outstanding nature and secure the future of coastal communities depending on marine natural resources.
YOUR POSITION WITH WWF TCO
The BAF Project Executant for Kilwa District will work to support, develop, coordinate and implement BAF related activities in Kibiti, Mafia and Kilwa Districts, reporting to the Marine Programme Coordinator. The position is based in WWF Kilwa office working closely and in collaboration with Fisheries Division, Marine Park and Reserve Unit (MPRU), Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP), National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) and the District Authorities of Kibiti, Mafia and Kilwa. S/He will also work in partnership with fishers, local community, fishing industry, and other government and non-government organizations.
The Project Executant supports, develops and coordinates the implementation of Blue Action Fund (BAF) project activities aimed to improve the management effectiveness of Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP) and associated buffer zones within the ‘Rufiji-Mafia-Kilwa seascape’ to maintain and improve its ecological value and livelihoods of the people and nature. S/He contributes to designing and implementing science-based management and ensures the monitoring plans and tools are having the desired results to support conservation and sustainable resource use. Additionally, S/He supports the establishment of Man and Biosphere Reserve in order to foster economic and human development which is socio-culturally and ecologically sustainable.
