Jhpiego is an international non-profit health organization affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University. For more than 45 years now, Jhpiego has empowered front-line health workers by designing and implementing effective, low-cost, hands-on solutions to strengthen the delivery of health care services for women and their families. By putting evidence-based health innovations into everyday practice, Jhpiego works to break down barriers to high-quality health care for the world’s most vulnerable populations. Jhpiego, implementing a number of projects in Tanzania, wishes to recruit the following positions, available for immediate filling.
Position: Specialist Driver for Mobile Clinic Unit – Heavy-Duty Vehicle [One position based in Morogoro]
Roles and responsibilities:
- To drive Jhpiego vehicle [mobile service unit] defensively, safely, reliably and time consciously.
- To operate in strict compliance with the Jhpiego, JHU and USAID vehicle management policies, procedures, and the Republic of Tanzania highway traffic code.
- To drive defensively and handle any unexpected events on the road and the driving discourtesy of other drivers and road users.
- Compliance with Tanzanian road rules (including speed limits)
- To ensure the assigned vehicle cater only for officiat/designated project purposes.
- To complete vehicle mileage log sheet after each trip and ensure travelers sign off. Present the log at the end of each month to Transport department for analysis.
- To complete vehicle fuel log upon fueling from an authorized fuel pumping station (Total fuel card station and back up fuel vendors). Present the log at the end of each month to Transport department for analysis
- To support Jhpiego mobile team clinical providers with logistics including set up and taking down of equipment, tents, loading and unloading supplies etc.
- To be supportive and welcoming to clients seeking services through the mobile unit, with no judgement on class, age, gender, profession, religion etc. of clients.
- To exercise a high-level of safety and security consciousness all the time when driving.
- Ensure the assigned JHPIEGO vehicle parked always in a safe location. (All Jhpiego vehicle to be parked in Jhpiego office in HQ and in Regions office compounds). To the regions where there is no Jhpiego, office the vehicle to be parked in safe location and the driver must make sure the safety.
- Track vehicle insurance and licensing expiry dates and notify Transport officer / Manager
- Report any accidents to the nearest police station, Transport Manager/ office to the relevant authority immediately and get references where possible plus particulars of the driver, registration number and insurance policy number, in case of involvement with other motor vehicles.
Vehicle maintenance
- Ensures assigned vehicle is in sound and operable condition at all times.
- Ensure assigned vehicle is clean at all times
- Track vehicle-servicing dates and notify the Transport Manager/ Officer.
- Make sure the vehicle is going for the routine services as per vehicle Manufacture instruction in service bulleting books, especially when the vehicle is still under warrant.
- Make sure he reports immediately the vehicle need minor repair or running / preventing maintenances to the Transport Manager/ Officer for action.
- Maintain emergency equipment in the vehicle, first aid kit, vehicle tool kit contain spanners, spare tire, towing rope, water supplies etc.
Office Support
- Provide routine office support services as instructed by the Transport Manager/officer or any assigned Jhpiego staff according to the routine available.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned,
Qualifications:
- Secondary school education. Ability to speak, read and write English. (with results certificate)
- Must possess clean valid Tanzanian driver’s license – Class C plain including other classes.
- Must have attended a special course of driving big buses including PCV and Defensive or Advanced Driving Certificate from National Institute of Transport (NIT)
- At least 10 years of driving big buses or mobile clinic units and relevant work experience, preferably with an international organization
- Pleasant personality and willing to follows and implement instructions.
- Requires a self-starter who does not need a lot of active supervision or detailed instructions in order to perform his/her regular duties.
- The Driver must be able to handle variety of different assignments, sometimes under pressure of deadlines.
- Willingness to work long hours and to be ready for travelling to different upcountry Regions in Tanzania as per instruction from the Supervisor
- He/she must be cooperative, hardworking with adaptability, as is the ability to project a professional and consistent image.
- Both internal and external clients must see the Driver as a person of competence, high integrity, capable and dependable.
- Be a resident of the location in Morogoro Region where the driver position is based.
