Background 

Skills for Employment (SET) is a Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) supported programme implemented in Tanzania. It aims to enhance youth (self-employment for the Vocational Skills Development system. It supports the government and private sector stakeholders to expand access to quality training that matches the demand from both the economy and youth. The project improves relevance of labour market data for curriculum development, enhances the quality of vocational teachers through continuing professional development and provides access to tailor made practical vocational training for youth in particular for women including young mothers.

Swisscontact is currently looking for a Communication Coordinator, to be based in Morogoro region with irregular travel to other locations within Tanzania.

Responsibilities and Tasks

Under the supervision and support of the Labour Market Analysis and Monitoring and Result Measurement Expert, the successful candidate will have the following responsibilities and tasks:

Responsibilities

The communications coordinator will:

  • Coordinate SET communications to ensure consistent and accurate messaging to external stakeholders, and develop public relations materials in line with the relevant organizational and programme guidelines and priorities.
  • Manage corporate internal and external communication in a professional way.
  • Strengthen digital and mass media presence to promote the SET project and enhance the reputation of Vocational Skills Development (VSD) in the general public.
  • Support appropriate management and sharing of gained SET knowledge internally and externally.

Tasks

 The communications coordinator will perform the following tasks:

1. Communication and public relations

  • Prepare annual communication plans in line with the overall communications strategy.
  • Update communication materials for the SET project and communicate this to all project staff.
  • Ensure that all public relations materials are developed in line with relevant organizational guidelines and provide accurate and consistent information.
  • Liaise with Swisscontact Regional communication officer to ensure that the project is informed of relevant best practice within the organization and complies with any new directives.
  • Jointly with the implementation team develop public relations materials related to the SET project.
  • Support the implementation team in maintaining a stakeholder database to facilitate public relations activities.
  • Improve outreach and advocacy of the SET project and enhance the reputation of the VSD through events and similar activities.

2. Media

  • Maintain good working relations with media outlets, share relevant project news for publication and prepare press releases for project-related events.
  • Liaise with Swisscontact Head office to update and maintain the Swisscontact website and contribute to social media outlets (LinkedIn and Twitter).
  • Develop and implement a social media plan to strengthen the project’s digital media presence for promoting the project and enhance the reputation of the VSD.

3. Knowledge management

  • Develop and implement a central knowledge sharing platform to ensure externalization and sharing of knowledge within the project team and external partners.
  • Lead the process of showcasing impact and results through the development of success stories, best-practice documentation and other learning products.
  • Jointly with the implementation team support production and dissemination of policy briefs, reports and studies.

4. Other tasks

  • Ensure that the implementation team is aware of their communication responsibilities when attending outside events.
  • Ensure the inclusion of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) and climate change into communications materials and/or reporting.
  • Support the SET team in finalizing documentation for donors and others as required.
  • Follow Swisscontact’s rules and procedures such as the Code of Conduct and the Country Manual.
  • Performs any other tasks as requested by the LMA and MRM expert.

 

Required qualifications, experience, and competencies

  • Bachelor in mass communication, journalism, public relation, advertisement, marketing, ICT-mediated content development, multimedia technology & animation or related studies
  • At least 3 years of experience in communication and content development in a similar position
  • Previous experience in knowledge management and production of learning products
  • Demonstrated strong writing skills in English and Swahili
  • IT affinity and knowledge in using IT in the workplace
  • The structured mindset with attention to detail and quality
  • Experience with animation software & video creation is a distinct advantage
  • Existing network to media and communication partners is a distinct advantage

 

Workplace 

The main place of work will be Morogoro with regular visits to other places in Tanzania.
