The Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania (JGI-TZ) is a reputable and rapidly expanding non-governmental organization committed to wildlife research, conservation, socio-economic development, and environmental education. Founded in 2001 by Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, JGI Tanzania, along with its partners, makes a difference through community-centered conservation, chimpanzees research projects, youth environmental education, and the innovative use of science and technology. Job Summary
The Communications Manager at the Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania (JGI-TZ) will play a leading role in executing comprehensive communications strategies across all the Institute’s projects and programs. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager will be responsible for enhancing the visibility of and engagement with JGI-TZ’s mission, work, and impact locally and internationally.
This role will involve managing all external communication channels, relationships with media, influencers, and other communications stakeholders, ensuring ongoing monitoring and continuous improvement of communications activities across the organization.
Key Job Responsibilities & Duties
Communication Strategy Development
- Lead implementation of the communications strategy that aligns communications priorities with JGI-TZ’s mission, goals, and programmatic objectives.
- Manage the development and delivery of consistent messaging across all projects, programs, and campaigns to ensure target audiences accurately and comprehensively understand JGI-TZ’s mission, work, and impact.
- Ensure the creation of strategic communication plans for key events, initiatives, and campaigns, including broad engagement with target audiences such as donors, partners, government, and the general public.
Content Creation and Management
- Oversee the creation of high-quality, compelling content, including stories, newsletters, blog posts, videos, and reports that effectively communicate the Institute’s impact and values.
- Work closely with project teams to collect stories, photos, and videos from the field to showcase project success.
- Develop content for digital platforms that communicates program impact and progress while effectively engaging online audiences.
- Ensure all communications materials adhere to brand guidelines and reinforce the identity of JGI-TZ.
Donor and Partner Communications
- Collaborate with development and fundraising teams to support the creation of donor communication materials, including proposals, reports, and impact stories.
- Maintain strong communication with partners and stakeholders, providing regular updates on JGI-TZ’s work and achievements.
Public Relations
- Serve as the primary media liaison, building and maintaining strong relationships with local and international media outlets.
- Draft press releases, media briefs, and other media-related content, ensuring accuracy and alignment with JGI-TZ’s goals.
- Organize press conferences, media visits, and public speaking opportunities for the Executive Director and program leaders.
- Represent JGI-TZ at conferences, meetings, and public forums to enhance visibility and develop strategic partnerships.
Digital Communications
- Oversee the management and growth of JGI-TZ’s digital presence, including its website, social media channels, and email newsletters.
- Ensure that comments, messages, and other forms of audience-generated content are engaged with and have received a response from the Institute.
- Monitor and analyze website traffic and social media engagement using analytics tools to optimize digital strategy.
Internal Communications & Creative Services
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure smooth internal communication processes, ensuring alignment on key initiatives and updates across the organization.
- Provide communications support for internal events, meetings, and workshops.
- Collaborate with program teams to create advocacy materials and campaigns that support conservation, education, and community development objectives.
Crisis Communication Management
- Develop and implement crisis communication strategies, providing leadership in response to any public relations challenges or crises.
- Ensure timely and effective communication in the event of emergencies or other high-stakes situations.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Regularly assess the effectiveness of communication efforts through data collection, surveys, and audience feedback.
- Provide regular reports to the Executive Director on communication activities and outcomes.
Minimum Job Qualifications & Other Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field is preferred.
- Master’s degree is an added advantage.
Experience
- At least five to seven years of experience in communications, public relations, or a similar role, preferably within the conservation and sustainable development industries.
- Previous NGO or public sector experience preferred.
Skills
- Proven experience in developing and executing communication strategies for diverse audiences, including media, donors, and stakeholders.
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili.
- Strong writing, editing, and content development skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, engaging way.
- Excellent media relations and public speaking skills, with the ability to serve as a spokesperson for the organization.
- Digital marketing and social media management experience, including proficiency with tools like Google Analytics, WordPress, and social media platforms.
- Ability to work with design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) and video editing software is a plus.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Commitment to the values and mission of the Jane Goodall Institute, with a passion for conservation and community development.
