The Kilimanjaro Dairy Cooperative Joint Enterprise is a new cooperative initiative that was registered in July 2017 by a number of Dairy Cooperatives in Hai District. The Joint Enterprise intends to bring together all Dairy Cooperatives in Kilimanjaro region to work on common interest of developing their dairy industry.

Project Summary

The Joint Enterprise initiative is being promoted under the auspices of the Income and Employment for Women and Youth (IEWY) project which is being implemented in the Dairy Sector in North-east Tanzania through a partnership between SNV Tanzania, Match Maker Associates Limited (MMA), Nronga Women Dairy Cooperative Society (NWDCS) and Capacity Building for Organisations (CABO) and funded by Comic Relief. The Government Local Authorities and the Cooperatives Registrar is also supporting the project.

 

JE main objective of this project is to develop the capacities of the Women-led dairy enterprises in Hai and Siha Districts and later in other districts in Kilimanjaro region, so that they increase their incomes and well-being of the local communities. The Project is supporting the start-up of the Kilimanjaro Dairy Cooperative Joint Enterprise Ltd, and among others will support acquisition of technical support staff during the interim period of at least 2 years before it becomes self-sustaining with its own staff.

Dairy Specialist (1 Position)

Overview of the position

Dairy Specialist will spearhead the design of a business model at the JE secretariat level, that will ensure effective delivery of technical services to members of the JE in order to improve their dairy production and productivity.

He / She will design improved extension solutions to facilitate the transfer of recognized quality compliance systems to dairy beneficiary farmers. He/she will be responsible for the training of Trainers on Animal husbandry practices, technology transfer, and adoption. He/ she will also mainly be responsible for responding to JE members enquires on all technical issues of supporting the dairy value chain in respect to sourcing and utilizing best practices in inputs and technologies, animal husbandry best practices, milk handling, bulking and transport to different markets (the milk supply chain). The dairy specialist will also be in charge of offering advisory services to the dairy processors who are current members of JE.

Job Duties;

  • Identify main constraints to access of improved dairy breeding inputs, adoption of best practices in animal production and milk collection by smallholder dairy farmers
  • Lead the JE technical Team in driving the breeding and livestock production, and milk collection issues
  • Based on the strategic business plan of the JE, develop an operational plan for implementing the business model of providing services to members and access to inputs and technologies
  • Ensure appropriate and timely implementation of planned activities in the respective operational plan
  • Coordinate and Monitor technical training activities with relevant Extension Agents on topics related to cattle management and animal husbandry- this ranges from trainings related to milk hygiene, milk seasonal calendar to milk testing, milk handling, and transportation;
  • In collaboration with KDCJE Board design the appropriate milk collection system and centers (MCCs) and facilitate planning and resources mobilization for upgrading of required facilities;
  • Train milk operators on best practices related to milk collection, milk testing, storage, and milk transportation and handling. The Dairy Specialist should regularly supervise the milk collection process to make sure quality milk is collected and transported to milk processor after proper testing is conducted
  • Train farmers on better hygienic practices of dairy keeping, control of disease and mortalities, and advice farmers on better breeding and feeding;
  • In collaboration with milk off-takers, design and implement a milk inspection system in collection centers (MCCs) to ensure adequate hygienic control is in place;
  • Advice livestock farmers on disease control and animal husbandry methods;
  • Train beneficiary farmers on best feeding practices to improve fodder production and preservation. This include training dairy farmers on making feeds such as silage and hay
  • Prepare seasonal calendar on dairy activities for the farmers where KDCJE works and train farmers on its usage
  • Collect regular data regarding dairy production, productivity, feeding, vaccination, medication and dairy diseases needed for the KDCJE
  • Establish real-time database on project activities related to his/her field
  • Assist KDCJE Coordinator in conducting beneficiary status surveys (monitoring & evaluation) and other dairy-related technical surveys;
  • Provide mentoring and technical advices to dairy farmers on regular basis;
  • Perform any other additional related duties as assigned by the supervisor

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in Veterinary Sciences or animal husbandry
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant working experience in the relevant fields and in particular advising dairy farmers
  • Experience in capacity building through training and other techniques especially with extension staff and farmer organizations
  • Proven track record in upgrading dairy value chain through working with relevant public and private sector actors.

Contract Type: Renewable Contract

Contract Duration: One year Renewable
