Reporting to: Digital Product Manager

Location: Dar es Salaam 

Ubongo is building brains and building change for families across Africa through fun edutainment on accessible technologies. We’re a social enterprise founded and based in Dar es Salaam, and we broadcast our shows Akili and Meand Ubongo Kids across the continent. We’re getting ready to expand our offices and operations into new markets, so we’re looking for energetic and self-starting new Ubongoers to join the team as we grow. Working here won’t be easy, but it will challenge and excite you, with lots of responsibility, plenty of fun, and the opportunity to impact the lives of millions of kids every day.  

We’re looking for a creative and capable digital product assistant who is confident working across different digital platforms and coding languages, and has good attention to detail and follow up, to help build our digital products from the ground up.

SOME OF YOUR TASK WILL BE:

  • Develop wireframes and sitemaps to help the team conceptualise products at the beginning of the development process
  • Create simple prototypes of different digital products (using tools like Figma and Invision) for user testing
  • Work with Human Centred Design Consultant to rapidly prototype a platform for sharing creative commons resources
  • Set up solutions for storage and sharing of digital content
  • Carry out regular maintenance (debugging, updating) of existing apps, websites and other digital products
  • Adapt and publish apps and games to various platforms including Android, iOS, html5
  • Setup and maintain Ubongo content repositories and information databases
  • Set up a secure system for backing up data from different websites
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor

TO BE A MATCH, YOU’LL NEED TO:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili
  • Bachelor ​or ​equivalent experience in software engineering, programming and/or data analysis
  • Experience working with Wordpress and Unity
  • Familiarity with programming languages including but not limited to Javascript, Java, PHP and C#
  • Have a can-do attitude and readiness to learn on the job as we create an innovative new digital products
  • Good at dealing with ambiguity and able to figure things out for yourself.
  • Self-motivation and a high level of responsibility to complete tasks in a timely manner and make significant progress with or without direct supervision.
  • Comfort dealing with and understanding digital products (apps, websites and videos etc.)
  • Passion for Ubongo’s vision of bringing localized edutainment to learners across Africa
  • Someone who loves kids. They’re why we do what we do. They’re running around our office all the time. Our kids’ music and videos will become part of your life (and constantly stuck in your head).
