The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organisation established in June, 1996, as a permanent tribute to Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere’s contribution to improving sustainably the quality of human relations. The Foundation is not affiliated with any political party or government. It is a politically and intellectually independent body. The Foundation works to promote Peace, Unity and People-Centred Development throughout the World, and particularly in Africa. Its work is based on Mwalimu Nyerere’s belief in the “fundamental principle that all humanity, regardless of their differences, are the purpose and justification for the existence of society, and all human activity in any given society’: This philosophy demands that communities everywhere should enjoy and develop themselves within the context of freedom and democracy based upon “good leadership, good governance, social and economic justice’. The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation is inviting qualified candidates to apply for the post of Executive Director of the Foundation. MNF has been commemorating 20 years of its existence, and in the course of doing so, it has begun implementing fundamental changes to its organisation, programmes and services. The new Executive Director will be expected to spearhead and oversee that institutional transformation, which aims at equipping MNF to better deliver its mandate.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management and coordination of the Foundation and its activities. In this capacity, the Executive Director has the following specific responsibilities:

  1. The Executive Director shall hold office on such terms and conditions as shall be specified by the Trustees in the Contract of Employment to be entered into between the Trustees and the Executive Director.
  2. The Executive Director shall be the Chief Administrator of the Foundation, responsible for the day to day affairs of the Foundation and answerable to the Board of Trustees, he shall also be the Secretary to the Board of Trustees.
  3. The Trustees may give the Executive Director directions of a general or specified character regarding the performance by the Foundation of any of its objects under the Foundation’s Deed, and the Executive Director shall give effect to every such direction given to him or her:
    (Duties 1-3 have been specified in Clause T of the Trust Deed).
  4. To lead, in conjunction with the Board of Trustees (BoTs) the development of the vision, mission, policies and overall strategy of MNF;
  5. To translate the overall strategy into concrete programmes, monitor and evaluate activities and also regularly review the strategy;
  6. To guide and oversee the implementation of MNF short, medium and long-term plans within the framework of the strategy;
  7. To innovate, set up, and maintain an appropriate organisational structure for MNF;
  8. To recruit, mentor and assess staff of MNF;
  9. To raise, allocate, control and account for all resources (material and financial) of MNF;
  10. To present, defend and publicise the goals and activities of MNF to the government, civil society, private sector and the international community;
  11. To create and maintain.networks with like-minded organisations and collaborate with them in the pursuit of the goals of MNF;
  12. To ad as the liaison between management and the BoTs and to represent the BoTs at its directives.
  13. To have a general aptitude of understanding people and the world.

KEY ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND WORK EXPERIENCE
The applicant should:
a. have at least 10 years of general work experience, and a minimum of 5 years experience at Research and Management level in reputable Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) or Intergovernmental organisations dealing in people-centred development research or coordinating work;
b. be a holder of a PhD or advanced University Degree in Political Science, Development Studies, History, Economics, International Relations, or Education, Project Management, Law or other related social sciences;
c. have research-based publications on Peace, Unity and People-Centred Development and other related subjects;
d. be conversant with Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s ideas, principles and philosophy;
e. have fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili; French would be an added advantage;
f. Have good computer skills.

Age limits: 35 years and above.
