WILDLIFE CONSERVATION SOCIETY (WCS) is inviting suitably qualified Tanzanians to fill the position of LANDSCAPE ASSISTANT PROTECTION COORDINATOR for its Ruaha-Katavi Landscape Program, based between Iringa and the Chunya area. This position reports to the Landscape Protection Coordinator with dotted line to Assistant Program Director.

Applicant Attributes:
• BSc minimum in an Environmental Management related discipline;
• At least 3 years working experience in wildlife-related law enforcement with extensive experience working at levels of considerable responsibility with key government partners, as well as experience in as many of the following related fields as possible:

  • Experience in training field operatives in anti-poaching;
  • Experience in managing ranger teams and protection systems in both government and community settings;
  • Experience in developing and implementing protection strategies;
  • Experience in coordinating law enforcement actions between different relevant government partners;
  • Familiar with the wildlife laws applicable in Tanzania;
  • Working familiarity with the application of various protection assets (such as dogs, aviation, covert camera systems etc);
  • Experience in coordinating ground to air anti-poaching coordination a distinct advantage (experience in small planes a distinct advantage);
  • Managing handlers and intelligence gathering operations (HUMINT);
  • Experience in law enforcement monitoring and the application of various GPS based monitoring approaches (SMART etc);
  • Capable in terms of writing and presenting verbally technical assessments and reports related to the above fields of work;
  • Experience in planning field based capacity building programs of different kinds;
     A very high level of integrity, honesty, and sense of responsibility;
     Excellent communication skills and fluent spoken and written English and Swahili;
     Proven experience in reporting writing and budget management;
     Ability to work under pressure- independently and as part of a dynamic team;
     Valid driving license and extensive 4WD experience essential with a clean driving record;
     General IT literacy and familiarity with all standard word processing packages. A working knowledge of SMART, QGIS and other related software applications a distinct advantage.

Outline Terms of Reference:

  • To assist Landscape Protection Coordinator with oversight of WCS support to Village Game Scout (VGS) networks in different WMA areas;
  • To assist Landscape Protection Coordinator to liaison with other partners including SPANEST, STEP as directed;
  • To assist Landscape Protection Coordinator to provide support to the implementation of SMART law enforcement monitoring across the landscape and ensure that monthly feedback is secured outlining in particular how such approaches have benefited the protection of different areas;
  • To assist Landscape Protection Coordinator to provide support to visiting anti-poaching and law enforcement specialists and donors in terms of planning travel and training/visit logistics and mobilization of trainees/partners etc;
  • Assist WCS in procuring law enforcement equipment from within Tanzania and internationally;
  • Support as directed the WCS aviation support program in the landscape;
  • According to agreed indicators, ensure that the monitoring of all WCS supported wildlife protection actions is carried out, data is collated and made available to the Program Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist;
  • To assist Landscape Protection Coordinator to maintain an up to date work-plan and assist with the drafting of internal and donor reports;
  • Assist with any other tasks as directed by either the Landscape Protection Coordinator or Assistant Program Director or Program Director.
