MS TCDC is a renowned Pan-African training Centre situated in Arusha, Tanzania, unique in our dedication to high-quality capacity development for social transformation. For more than 50 years, we have delivered high-quality capacity development in areas such as democratic governance, human rights, transformational leadership, gender equality, youth participation, and climate change governance.

MS TCDC trainings are structured around informal and formal education programmes with strong synergies. MS TCDC is currently expanding its programmes to support social movements worldwide, especially those in Africa. We, therefore, seek a Movement Support Associate to assist us in carrying out this work.

Location: Usa River, Arusha

Reports to: Social Movements and Organizing Expert

Job Summary

The Movement Support Associate will carry out a range of administrative duties related to supporting social movements, including but not limited to: arranging written agreements with movements, communicating expectations between TCDC colleagues and movement leaders, supporting finance department colleagues with basic bookkeeping and compliance with internal protocols, troubleshooting challenges that arise, and tracking and reporting on outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

    • Manage grant disbursements to various movements and movement-minded groups.

Liaise between TCDC and social movement partners to facilitate effective communication and collaboration.

  • Draft and manage agreements between TCDC and movement partners, ensuring clarity and compliance.
  • Link movements to other forms of support, including in-kind assistance offered by MOVE, such as training, tools, and research.
  • Report on achievements of movements supported by TCDC, tracking progress and outcomes.
  • Safeguard the anonymity and autonomy of certain movement partners, respecting their privacy and independence.
  • Assist in identifying and linking movement members to various forms of crisis support when needed.
  • Administer paperwork related to movement support from TCDC, maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Coordinate meetings and events between TCDC staff and movement leaders, fostering collaboration and synergy.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with supported movements to assess their needs and provide assistance accordingly.
  • Assist in developing funding proposals and grant applications for social movements, ensuring alignment with their goals.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of TCDC’s support on the progress and effectiveness of supported movements.
  • Facilitate capacity-building workshops and training sessions for movement members on relevant topics, enhancing their skills and knowledge.
  • Advocate for the interests and concerns of supported movements within TCDC and other relevant organizations or forums.
  • Stay updated on relevant developments in the field of social movements and incorporate best practices into TCDC’s support strategies, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Any other related duties assigned by the Supervisor or Executive Director.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Strong understanding of social movements and grassroots organising principles.
  • Demonstrated expertise with two years of experience in comparable roles.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including of basic office and accounting software, such as Teams and Excel.
  • Fluency in English, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong time management skills with a keen focus on meeting deadlines.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Adaptability to evolving project needs.
  • Proficiency in Swahili, French, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, or other pertinent languages is desirable.
  • Some familiarity with supporting unconventional or unregistered groups is advantageous.

Terms and Conditions:

The Movement Support Associate will be subject to the following terms and conditions:

  • The position is available for local hiring and is offered under MS TCDC’s employment terms with a fixed-term contract of one (1) year, which may be extended based on the future programmatic focus and needs of MS TCDC.
  • A basic salary under MS TCDC’s scheme of service – according to experience and education when relevant.
