Position Summary

IHI is looking for two Nurses to fill vacant positions in a project titled ‘Identifying most effective Treatment Strategies to Control Arterial Hypertension in sub-Saharan Africa - A Randomized Controlled Trial’ (coArtHA). CoArtHA is a randomized controlled 2-center clinical trial aiming to evaluate the best arterial hypertension treatment strategy among people with African descent. 

The study will aim to compare two combination treatment strategies with the WHO standard aiming at rapid control of arterial hypertension: a dual combination of a CCB and an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) starting at half dose), and a triple combination of CCB, TZD and ARB starting at a quarter dose with optional dose titration after 4 and 8 weeks, if target blood pressure is not reached.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Take vital signs of People living with HIV (PLHIV) and hypertension patients, temperature, weight, and height/length, mid up circumference, etc.
  • Identify very sick and handicapped patients when seeking services.
  • Perform participant’s screening/recruitment for studies (assessing inclusion and exclusion criteria; explain nature of study; risks and benefits, informed consent); conduct interviews and maintain client records and case report forms.
  • Counsel PLHIV and/or arterial hypertension about their conditions, HIV infection, about coArtHA trial, KIULARCO and/or other ongoing studies.
  • Process and maintain patient documents and schedule appointments for patients.
  • Provide support to clinical and research activities to ensure the protection, rights, safety, and well-being of the patients.
  • Ensure all necessary medical and non-medical equipment needed such as stethoscope, BP machine, thermometer, balance, gloves, etc, are in good condition and available.
  • Coordinate putting of all forms (CRF) such as baseline, follow up, biochemistry, haematology, x ray, sonography, lab follow up, transfer in/out, admission into clinician’s offices and also putting/replacing medical materials.
  • Work in full agreement with the job descriptions; coArtHA trial, hospital and government (MOHSW) regulations.
  • Provide health education and adherence counselling to PLHIV and/or hypertension patients who will be enrolled in coArHA trial.
  • Work in a team and helping each other in creating a comfortable working atmosphere.
  • Attend all compulsory meetings such as every Tuesday at CDCI and other IHI/hospital meetings according to their profession.
  • Assist to plan, coordinate and support research activities organized by IHI and other partners.
  • Train and supervise students from TTCIH, nursing schools, SFUCHAS and foreigners if required.
  • Undertake any other tasks that the supervisor shall reasonably require from time to time.

Qualification and Experience

  • Certificate/Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution, registered.
  • Prior experience working in clinical research is an added advantage.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to work under minimum supervision but also within a team.
  • Good/Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
