Located in Moshi, Maua Mazuri sells disease-free and high-yielding seedlings which are produced in our state-of-the-art plant tissue culture laboratory and raised in our nursery and on our demonstration farm in Mbosho. We are an international company of highly talented scientists, agriculturalists, and business professionals who are united by the goal of providing African farmers with the best seedlings.

 

Position

The Production manager is responsible for the successful daily operation of the nursery and demo farm at Mbosho and ensures optimal conditions for growing all types of (tissue culture) seedlings, both fruit and trees.

A successful Production Manager is detail-oriented but also keeps the bigger picture in mind, is a keen problem solver focused on efficiency, and takes a hands-on approach to management.

The Production Manager manages the Banana Demo Farm Production, Passion fruit block production as well as our Fruit Orchard. The production Managers work in close cooperation with The Supervisor Tissue Culture Manager as well as colleagues employed at other nursery sites and in the company’s back office. The Production Manager reports to the Assistant Operational Manager.

 

Key activities and Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • The management of all nursery & farm staff (including interns), including recruitment and training;
  • Managing the Demo Farm, Fruit Orchard as well as the Passion Orchard.
  • Continuously seeking for improvement of the entire nursery and farm’s operations: staff, company’s standard operating procedures (SOPs), layout, infrastructure, equipment and the buildings.
  • Preparing planting and harvesting schedules in close cooperation with the Supervisor of Tissue Culture Seedlings and the Sales department.
  • Inspecting and monitoring crop and tree seedling growth.
  • Conducting tests on soil and water and preparing irrigation planning.
  • Handling products produced on the farm and preparing them for sales/dispatch in close cooperation with Sales & Marketing colleagues.
  • Together with the Tissue Culture Supervisor preparing budgets.
  • Supervising and providing production status & financial monitoring in accordance with the company’s reporting formats.
  • Efficient ordering and stocking of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other supplies.
  • Responsible for the organization of good maintenance of equipment and machinery on the demo farm/nursery: timely scheduling of repairs and regular maintenance, all within the approved budget.
  • Ensuring all staff adheres to the company’s health and safety, environmental, and HR regulations.
  • Responsible for adequate documentation and record keeping.
  • Working with local governments and research institutes when it’s required.
  • Receiving guests and prospective clients for a nursery farm tour.

 

Required qualifications/skills

The ideal candidate for this position:

  • Has a passion for agriculture and a minimum of Five years experience in full-season management, a bachelor's in Agronomy or General Agriculture is an advantage.
  • Detail oriented, and capable of precisely executing, thus preventing contamination and other challenges
  • Has working experience with farm planning and farm infrastructure.
  • A track record of farm management success, supported by references
  • Has working experience in leading teams; is able to build a good team spirit with mutual trust and a respectful way of working together and has a positive management style that supports staff to grow and excel in their job.
  • Has good communication skills and is a good team player.
  • Is good at time management.
  • Must be good in English and fluent in Swahili, in written and in verbal form.
  • Has good computer skills (Excel, Word)
  • Has an open mind and is eager to continuously learn and improve his/her professional skills.
  • Working in a nursery & farm requires specific physical abilities: a Production manager must be able to dig and harvest by hand.
